What is a manor ?

What is the requirements for a house to be called a manor-house?
Or does the word 'manor' always refer to 'the estate including the house'?
Is it only a question about the size of the estate or does the owner has to have a title? Could anyone rich enough to buy a big estate call it a manor?

If I'm not mistaken, the house where the Digweed family lived was called Steventon manor. But they only "leased" the estate including the house, wich was own by the Knight family, wich were titled I believe.
But then it was inherited by Jane's brother Edward, and was it still called a manor?
Is there an exact definition for the word manor?
