For some time I've been wondering about the date given for the Netherfield Ball (Tuesday, November 26th). It occured to me that it is quite possible that there is no significance to it as a specific day in a certain year.

Rather, I think it is used for the effect of "day, month, date". JA might have merely said "the date was set", or that it was "towards the end of November", or "November 26", or any other variation. Using all three together makes it *sound* more important, as if it was to be circled in red on the calandar. This get across that it was to be *the* social event of the year.

Of course, I can see her using a calandar or an almanac to get it straight in her own head, and ensure it all work out, but that's just her attention to details (even those which never make it into the book).

I remain,
Jason E.
