M.T. Emma2 and reality

The director of Emma2 is quoted as saying that he wanted the movie to be "one step prettier than real life", and I persoanlly think that he achieved this- if not more steps than that. Generally speaking it's a very pretty movie, but not incredibly "real", in costumes, sets etc.

However, without knocking the film for not being accurate (I don't think historical accuracy was a primary concern, and I really don't think the film suffers much for historical costumes that are not incredibly historical), is there any logic to the dresses that Emma wears, or to Harriet's plaid outfits? What about Mr Knightley's silk shirt in the proposal scene? Is there any attempt at all to "date" the production? Or are the costumes merely fantasy?
