Calling

Hi, I was wondering about who and when people were expected to call in the 1800's. In P&P, Darcy calls on Lizzy at Rosings, though they aren't well acquainted, and Jane calls on Caroline while she is in London. And I was wondering if Mr. Bingley would be expected, by etiquette, to call on Jane if he knew she was in London. If so, this helps explain why Darcy concealed her presence. People are "calling" all the time on each other in JA's novels; is it that they just do so out of choice, or are they expected to call on friends/relatives in town. Were the expectations any different for men and women? Thanks!
