Coachmen waiting outside

I recently read the kindle sample of the book “Longbourn” and came across a bit where it spoke about the coachman waiting outside in the cold while the Bennet girls danced.

Would that really be the case? I assumed that the reason carriages had to be ordered was so that they could be brought round at the right time and therefore there would not be someone waiting the whole time.
