Speaking of Money

I hope this is the proper forum for these questions. If not, please correct me.

I watched P&P2 for the umpteenth time last night and I realized that Bingley and Darcy were not in the area long enough to unpack before Mrs. Bennet had all the details of their financial situation (from the Lucases, I believe). Also, everywhere he went Mr. Collins informed whoever would listen about the price of the furnishings at Rosings.

Is it realistic that people spoke about financial matters so openly in that era? More specifically, I know it's considered rude among many people now to ask someone how much money they make or have, wouldn't that have also been the case then? Would Bingley and Darcy have personally revealed their annual income to the Lucases, or how else could they have found out?

And wouldn't it have been in bad taste then (as is now) to go around bragging about the cost of furnishings?

Please enlighten me.
