Briefly: The Master of Ceremonies would perform a number of functions at a more formal ball or assembly. He'd be responsible for the smooth running of the dances. He might arrange the size and order of couples within a set (there are references to the ladies being assigned numbers), arrange for the appropriate music for each dance, ensure the dance was conducted with proper decorum, etc.

If an individual or group were to show up, and they were not known by the room (or if you wished to meet somebody in particular), they would approach the M of C. The Master would then provide that critical first introduction. Otherwise, people would be forced to stand on the sidelines and look on.
