Some scattered notes about the Austens..

It was a tough life for George Austen six and his two sisters,Philadelphia seven and Leonora five, losing both their parents. (There had been a third sister with the unusual name Hampson, who died young). And no one really wanted to take care of them. Not their stepmother Susanna Kelk(she had perhaps no means to),but there was money for education left by their father. And George was a bright boy at Tonbridge school.
Years later he would come back to his old school for a short time as a teacher.

Strange how we know a lot about some of them, but very little about others. His younger sister Leonora for instance, what happened to her? The only information I find is that she never married and still lived in 1769. I find it sad when I read the so often repeated "d.unm."

It's rather interesting to look at Jane's brother Edward and his family.
He had 11 children during 15 years. Two of them died unmarried. Of the married couples three had no children. Among the rest one had seven + nine children by two wiwes. One had 15 children. But in the last case it doesn't seem to have been too hard for her, she lived to 84. But on the other hand,Marianne who d.unm. lived to 95!
It's all chance. Take Francis, Jane's brother.the Admiral, he who had the hardest life of them lived to 91! But Mrs Austen who I think complained about ill health all her life, also lived to high age. and Jane.. no it's not fair!

I have wondered why Janes father did not pursue a career in the Church.
How long would he have had to study further for a higher title in the church? He got a higher education than his sons. Perhaps he was just tired of the university life, and wanted to marry and have a normal life.
He married Cassandra Leigh 1764 in Bath. For her that year was both happiness and sorrow because her father Thomas(rector of Harpsden) died later the same year. And her mother Jane (Walker) follows them to Dean/Steventon.
Oddly this repeats itself in 1768. That year Mrs Austen's sister Jane marries Dr Edw.Cooper and their mother dies. Again, happiness and sorrow the same year.

By this time they were settled in Steventon and had had three children, one each year 1765,66,67,so time for a pause till 1771!
