The Reign of Terror, and the French Revolution generally pushed things away from the Latitudinarian position. Evangelical writers argued that if the English upper classes didn't want to be guillotined themselves, they needed to encourage the lower orders to accept the station to which God had called them, and this in turn required a much higher standard of religious observance from the well to do.
