London parishes
In Response To: Same story ()

] ] Does anyone know anything about how the rectors of London parishes were appointed?

] About 600 out of the five and a half thousand benefices in England and Wales were "owned" by university colleges and sundry schools; about the same number were "owned" by the church itself, and another hundred or so were owned by the king. The rest were in private ownership.

Without any facts it's hard to say. It may well have been divided in the same way as in the country, between the Crown(in reality the Prime minister),influential(and rich) private owners and the Church, with the exception of the univerities.

Another interesting question is, how did the London or other city priests support themselves?
In the country they had the tithes and some times plots of land they could use. Plus that food probably was cheaper.

Was there some kind of church tax similar to tithes payed by businessmen, traders, shopkeepers or factory owners?
Was some kind of accomdation included with the living?

Only questions I'm afraid.
