Date of Move to Steventon?
In Response To: M.T. Th e Austen's first home ()

] Below is a link to a very large graphic. It's a map that was originally drawn on a scale of one inch to one mile, and it dates from 1759 - just before the Austens were married. The newly wedded couple moved into a house in Deane (or Dean), with a projected income of a couple of hundred a year.

Does anyone know when the Austens moved from Deane parsonage to the renovated Steventon rectory? The Park Honan biography I'm reading describes the move rather dramatically: "Lying in misery, Mrs. Austen one day was hoisted on a feather bed which was 'placed upon some soft articles of furniture' and pulled up to Steventon rectory'." The quotation he makes is from the 1871 J.E. Austen-Leigh Memoir of Jane Austen. However, he doesn't mention the date of the move.

And by the way - does anyone have any idea why poor Mrs. Austen was transported in this rather odd fashion?
