Running a school for girls seems to have been a common means for well-educated women of no fortune to earn a living. Mary Wollstonecraft tried it, as did the mother of Mary Robinson (and Mary was set to work in it while not yet out of childhood herself).

JA doesn't mention this as an occupation for impoverished gentlewomen: as far as I recall, the only school mentioned at all is Mrs Goddards.
