Women and university admission...

It seems that women were not admitted to any British University until the University of London was set up in 1836 - much too late for Jane, of course. (see link below).

Women were admitted to study at Oxford and Cambridge much later but, initially, they were not allowed to graduate. I recall a talented Math teacher in school who studied at Cambridge in the 1940s and had the 'Master of Arts' degree. However, when she had passed all the required examinations she was not awarded a degree but a 'certificate' to show that she had passed the degree examinations. It was only much later that the university awarded her the MA degree, presumably, when the university statutes had been changed to allow such awards.
