When Lady Catherine says "mention my name at the Bell and they will attend you", was Regency customer service that bad that you had to have noble connections and drop a name or two to get served?!
Sorry, just a piece of a Lizzy-type witticism for you, but on a serious note, what was Regency era customer service like?
There are very few examples in the novels; only the Dashwood sisters in the jeweller's comes to mind. But here's a situation - if you arrived in a shop before, say, Viscountess Smith (i.e someone of the nobility), would you, as the person next in line, or would Viscountess Smith as a person of nobility, expect to be served next?
Also, does anyone know of any famous/infamous examples of bad service during the Regency or were people always that polite?
