Insulation! *chatter chatter*

So, you've acquired a good-sized fortune, enabling you to settle down in style in a large English country home around 1800. You hire the servants, select the furnishings, move yourself in, and now...

You're freezing!!

How on earth did people get through winters in those houses? Fires couldn't fill the entire room with warmth, and surely there wasn't enough in the way of insulation to keep things warm, though I suppose the windows and doors could be properly sealed.

The temperatures must have dropped well below freezing indoors. Heavy layers of wool and liberal use of blankets, perhaps?
