of the word information in this sense is in P&P. When Lydia has run away, Elizabeth is thinking of Mr Darcy and feels that "...from his knowledge and information of the world" she would have gained something of material importance. And earlier in the book she feels that from Colonel Fitzwilliam and Wickham, the colonel may have a better-informed mind.
Did being a 'man of information' have more to do with education or being entertaining? Or did it just mean that the colonel and Darcy knew what was going on in the world?
Isn't there a definition for the exact phrase?
