Persistence of Tradition

The whole first paragraph is dedicated to denouncing the French as revolutionaries, but the second falls back on the 18th century habit of denouncing them as Catholics.

I'm also intrigued by the conjunction of the modern term of abuse, "Republicans," and its 17th century counterpart, "Leveller." In the same way, I have read, the first English Protestants in the 16th century were referred to in public records by the 120 year old term "Lollards."
