In Response To: Quilted garments ()

] Barbara, about the only quilted garments I can think of (aside from gentlemen's quilted waistcoats) are "douillettes" - a sort of overcoat or pelisse with a quilted or wadded lining.

] I apologize in advance if it's not appropriate to link to one's own website, but the link below is to a discussion of douilletes with a fashion plate from "Costume Parisien" which appeared on my website in September, 2002.

Thanks, Louisa. It's wonderful to see these detailed Regency era fashions, especially "douillettes." I'm happy to have been directed to another place where I can get some specific materials and information about authentic Regency garments. (See you there!) I love the soft, ethereal quality of the daywear and all the embellishments in the formal clothing as well. The interpretations of these designs in the recent adaptations of JA inspire lots of questions and I am excited to see and learn more about them.

One of the things I liked most at Chawton was a chance to see the mannequins in reproduction (I assume) Regency clothes and the display with Jane and Cassandra's topaz cross necklaces from their brother as well as a quilt that I believe JA herself had worked on. It adds so much to that feeling of empathy and like-mindedness with JA to know that she worked with her needle and prided herself on those accomplishments.
