Can anybody tell me how long engagements generally lasted in JA's time? I gather that the later Victorian tendency to one-year and even longer engagements had not yet come into play. From the evidence in P&P, once people were officially engaged, they seemed to marry within quite a short period - 2 months or less, as both Charlotte Lucas and Jane and Elizabeth Bennet did.
