We visited The Vyne on a JA tour in 1999...
In Response To: Jaen Austen's Assembly Room ()

] Can Anyone tell me what 'The Vyne' means? I read that JAne used to go there for a ball etc. and now I'm curious what the name of this Room actually means.

...and JA's visits were well featured in the guides' descriptions of the estate's history. It is a very large estate with an extremely large and handsome house and grounds. There was a most elegant ballroom which would have been a delight for dancing! The grounds were well designed for strolling and admiring the landscape. There also was a very large library with shelves from floor to ceiling. We were told that the estate owned first editions of JA novels, so we scanned every shelf from the roped-off entrance, and fancied that we spotted those priceless volumes in plain white wrappers on an upper shelf.

I strongly recommend visiting The Vyne if you get the opportunity.
