One Wedding Begets Another....
In Response To: M.T.The Old Song ()

] "...Did you ever hear the old song 'Going to One Wedding Brings on Another?" ....WHAT old song? Does anyone have any ideas on this one?

A quick look through the Oxford Dictionary of English Proverbs turned up these three literary examples - two before and one after Austen's time:

1634: 'Tis said that one wedding produceth another.' (M. Parker Wooing Maid)

1713 'One Wedding, the Proverb says, begets another' (John Gay Wife of Bath)

1848 'One wedding makes many.' (Charles Dickens Dombey and Son)

The proverb may well have fallen into disuse, but I've often heard it said (and I know that many people believe) it's quite common to meet your future partner at a wedding. If memory serves, the idea was used at least four or five times in the film 'Four Weddings and a Funeral.'

I had high hopes at the last wedding I attended, but no joy! If anyone here has met a partner in such a way, can they please reveal all at Ramble????
