This is my first post to this board, but the question has been in my head for some time. Was it common for men to request two dances from ladies, , i.e. Bingley's famous request for the first "two dances"? I also see in NA, Catherine & John Thorpe have two dances (and Catherine wants no more). Was this a common practice?

I would appreciate any ideas. Thank you
