Oxford and Cambridge

In P&P, Darcy says that his father supported Wickham at Cambridge. In P&P2 they show Darcy at the same University, but I have a vague memory that it was more common for a poor relative or hanger-on to be supported at a different university to the son of the family. If that is so, Darcy is more likely to have gone to Oxford.
Does anyone how if I'm right about poor relations?

Secondly, I believe Oxford had more of a Tory leaning and Cambridge was whiggish. Does anyone know if this was strong enough to really influence which university a family sent their son to?
If both of the above are true, would Darcy have been a Tory? Some time ago on this board someone suggested that Darcy was a whig. I'm afraid I couldn't grasp the reasoning, and in character Darcy appears to me to be my image of a Tory - conservative, strait-laced and snobbish. Do I have an incorrect image of Tories, or could whigs be those things too?
