In MP, when Edward and Fanny are invited to dine at the parsonage (with the Grants), Fanny was nervous about her obligation "to submit...to being the principal lady in company, and to all the little distinctions consequent thereon..." What would these distinctions have been? Was the "principal lady" the highest ranking lady of the guests (and because Fanny was the only lady guest, she was therefor, "it"?)
