] At least with Edward, at some point he had "lost" his first born status, which was conferred on Robert, and so in his circumstances, was a second son.

So at least the "first son" status didn't ruin his character for him. And Robert Ferrars' character was formed whilst he was a second son, so his status didn't help him in the least to become a good person.
