I know that the custom of the white wedding dress and veil didn't get wide use until after Queen Victoria, and I've heard that for the average woman, her best dress would have been her wedding dress.

For a lady of means like Anne Elliott or Emma Woodhouse, what would be considered an appropriate wedding dress (and I'm not interested in the movie version...)?
