If one was mourning for another relative, would one use the same sequence of mourning garb, but over a shorter timespan? For example, if and when Mr Woodhouse dies, would Miss Bates be expected to take on mourning dress, and for how long? Or would she be able to get away with black ribbons?

When Mr Elliot first appears in Persuasion, his servant is wearing ribbons for the dead Mrs Elliot. I suppose he would, too?
