The Last Night of the Proms

September 16, 2001 07:01AM
<a href="[www.pemberley.com] src="/emote/ramt.gif" align=left hspace=8 vspace=4 border=0></a>This event which is usually a noisy celebration of the ending of the BBC Proms season and an excuse for patriotic partying was a sober affair this year. Most of the traditional songs and music which are usually accompanied by hearty communal singing, flag-waving and ballooon-bursting were replaced by sober and reflective pieces more appropriate to the popular mood. Finally, the finale to Beethoven's 9th and last of all "Jerusalem", a beautiful English song envisaging a perfect world. The concert began with the playing of the British and American national anthems, and a short and moving speech by the orchestra's American conductor.
