Rectors and Vicars are not the same
In Response To: Titles for clergymen ()

The name clergyman is the general name for men 'of the cloth'.

A rector was the wealthier one as he had an income provided by rent from parish land usually referred to as tithes (one tenth of the value of the annual produce).

A vicar received a smaller income - small tithes and/or stipend (salary) from the diocese.

A curate was basically an assistant to a rector or vicar.
