In _MP_ in chapter 45, Mary Crawford writes her infamous letter to Fanny expressing her hopes over Tom Bertram's death. In that she says about Edmund's ordination:
It was a foolish precipitation last Christmas, but the evil of a few days may be blotted out in part. Varnish and gilding hide many stains. It will be but the loss of the Esquire after his name.
What does this mean? Apart from that Mary has appalling moral standards, of course. Why would Edmund lose Esquire after his name if he becomes a baronet after being ordained? Would he need to be released by his bishop?
