Thanks for clearing up the esquire reference. I was wondering if being a minister meant you lost the esquire title but now I understand.

I'm still curious about the first sentence in my quote from Mary the evil of a few days may be blotted out in part.. If Tom Bertram had died and Edmund inherited, would Edmund still have also remained a minister in the Church? Or would he have resigned his position in an honourable way?
