Briefly, we're all right.

The wealthy had recourse to Acts of Parliament to get divorced, the poor had various folk-customs like wife sale (remember "The Mayor of Casterbridge") but most people had only running away or bigamy as a way out of a marriage.

The C of E did not allow for the remarriage of the innocent party, but other Protestant churches did. And since only the rich could get divorced anyway, a trip to Scotland or somewhere wouldn't have been a problem.
