Brandons...

...must have had a true divorce. She had brought the money to the marriage but was left destitute when the Colonel found her. She had been unfaithful to Mr Brandon, so he had a legal reason to divorce her.

It's been interesting to read such full info about this! Tricky business but interesting in these day. One can't help wondering, after all! Thanks to everyone who's provided this information! Maybe something to add to the FAQ?
