Custance
In Response To: Hugenot ()

My great grandmother's maiden name was Custance, which was originally de Coustance and is traced back to 1066, but not directly, to a woman who was a lady-in-waiting of the court of William the Conqueror.

Mr. Custance, with his wife and constantly expanding family, was the squire in Parson James Woodforde's parish. I've always thought this was a rather odd name, and I'm glad to see it explained. No relatives of yours, I suppose?
