Women writers
In Response To: Appellations ()

women in J.A.'s day used pen names because being a writer and making money at it, among other reasons, was not socially acceptable for a woman, married or not. A book which goes over this topic with great earnest is the Cambridge Companion to Jane Austen. I'd love to go into details :-B. But the book is presently hiding. See Henry's post just above for J.A.'s case.
