Interfering parents
In Response To: The Professional Woman Writer ()

Unmarried women did not face these restrictions but they lived under the rule of their fathers' authority, and father's (like Frances Burney) might tend to disapprove of their daughters risking their modesty, their reputations, and possibly their marriagability by publishing.

What right have they to interfere, really? Take for instance Mr. Edgeworth...he made Maria alter the plot of Belinda, so as include Virginia's story (all that scrap about Clarence Hervey raising a woman to be his wife). And in the third edition she made several alterations pursuant to his wishes (the black servant Jaba did not longer marry an English woman because his father disapproved of miscenegation) and Belinda's attachment to Mr. Vincent is made a lesser thing...again because her father disaproved of it!

The nerve! Why didn't the man write a novel himself, if he though he had such good ideas?

¡Me indigna!
