I suppose that technically not all five garments have to overlap the same part of the body, but if all buttons were buttoned, and if the garments were designed for winter, I suspect that a man's neck could be insullated by 5 layers. And if the cravat is wrapped around more than once. . . that's 6 layers to keep the chill off our well dressed Regency heros' necks. We wouldn't want them to catch cold, now would we?
