Majorca, Mallorca

I have always thought of the Spanish island Majorca as just that, Majorca--I know of it from reading about the Georgian, Regency, Napoleonic eras.

I just searched the web for info on Majorca and found it spelled Mallorca. Anybody know the history behind the name/spelling change? Is this change comparable to Peking/Beijing? None of the other Balearic islands seem to have undergone a name change.

FYI--in my searching, I found what looks to be an interesting book, "Harbors and High Seas: An Atlas and Geographical Guide to the Aubrey-Maturin Novels of Patrick O'Brian."
