Good guys and bad guys

If I may quote Miss Elizabeth Bennet:

`It does not necessarily follow that a deep, intricate character is more or less estimable than such a one as [Mr Bingley's] ... but intricate characters are the most amusing. They have at least that advantage.'

I entirely share Miss Bennet's views on the matter, and I venture to suggest that her creator might also have done. Whatever else you say about Warren Hastings, he was certainly interesting.
