I have not read much aobut it in recnet years but I had understood htat this was one reason why the Church was being enlivened from iwhtin by the Evangelical Movement. sorry I can't quote anything at the moment. This was the tiem when the joke was that the fool of the family went into the Church. Indeed it is one of Mary C's rathre specious arguments aobut the good of hte clergy as a profession. She sees them as lazy and not wiling do very much.
with regard to education, I don't think that the fact that poeple went ot university necessarily means they spend their time studying there. What was Edmudn doing in MP? he was not at university as far as I recall. he was at home waiting to be ordained. I don't say that he was necessarily wasting his time but he could have been.
