Clever dogs!

] they often sent the dogs back on their own whilst they kept the cattle penned waiting for slaughter in Leadenhall and Smithfield Markets. Apparently, the Droving Inns were quite used to the dogs arriving on their own, expecting to be fed and housed for the night, and it was usual to feed the dog, just as if the owner was with it.

Have you got a reference or more information on this? It sounds fascinating!
