I am positive that the sources of bad smells (mentioned in JA's description of Fanny's visit to in Portsmouth) have been discussed at length on this board. My eyes were permanently opened (nostrils permanently pinched?) as to the reality of living in London during the summer when I learned here of the practice of cesspooling under the houses. Bleaggh! I hope the winters were less fragrant for JA's sake!
