] (1748-1833) had his seat at Wentworth House in Yorkshire. A whig, he joined William Pitt in 1794, becoming lord lieutenant of Ireland. In 1816, he founded the Fitzwilliam Museum at Cambridge. Both the Wentworth and Fitzwilliam families were Saxon.
Thanks. I am a Big Fan of Pitt (and have posted several bizarre theories claiming JA using him as a model for Darcy). I had spotted he was "most intimate friends" (Macaulay) with Pitt the Younger. I would be interested to know if Elizabeth Wentworth and he were connected (there are about 200 years between them, though!)
I think JA's one heart-throb also became Lord Lieutenant of Ireland - Tom Lefroy. But not, I think, in JA's lifetime. Didn't know about the Fitzwilliam museum connection. Very interesting.
