If neither party is free to marry anyone else while the other lives, why bother getting a divorce? Is the man then absolved of responsibility for his wife's debts, etc. (as would appear to be the case for the Brandons)? Or is it just a public statement that he refuses to tolerate whatever behaviour led to the divorce?

I did think it through before asking my question. I'm usually nervous about posting on this board at all.
