After Hertford (going downstream) the river Lee flows through country that both is and is not something like it would have been in JA's day.
It is because there are still water meadows known as Kings Meads (unlike in most of the valley). However, as there is an exceptional meadow a little further downstream I will not linger here.
It is not because the A10 crosses the valley on a huge concrete flyover between Hertford and Ware, rather spoiling the walk both visualy and audibly.
In terms of the wildlife to be seen on this walk, there would have been many changes, some that have already been mentioned and yet still many plants and bird species that would have been familiar to JA. However, it is unlikely anyone in Regency England would have seen the little egret that spent time at Kings Meads in March of this year, as the species has only been colonisng Southern Britain for the last few years.
