Local\nAssembly Rooms in Stamford, Lincolnshire were built by the local dancing\nmaster, Askew Kirk, on land leased from the Earl of Exeter( who owned the\nBurghley estate nearby (Immortalised as Rosings in P&amp;P3).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Indeed it was a\ncondition of his lease of the land that he&nbsp;<strong>had<\/strong>&nbsp;to build an assembly room on the site.\nIt was thought that buildings such as assembly rooms, which encouraged social\ninteraction between the marriageable in the locale were an advantage for the\nsmall market town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">(All information\ncourtesy of the archives of the Stamford Museum) Mr Kirk acted as Master of\nCeremonies at the assemblies there, and, of course, gave dancing lessons to\nnearly all the local people who wished to take part <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As to who paid\nfor what and when, let\u2019s have a look at the text of a poster advertising a\nseries of subscription assemblies at the Assembly Rooms at Newcastle (where\nLydia and Wickham ended living at the conclusion of P&amp;P).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The First of\nthe&nbsp;<br>\nSIX SUBSCRIPTION ASSEMBLIES<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Will be on\nTHURSDAY 12thJANUARY 1792<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The SECOND on\nTHURSDAY 2nd FEBRUARY<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The THIRD on\nTHURSDAY 16th FEBRUARY<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The FOURTH on\nTHURSDAY 1st MARCH<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The FIFTH on\nThursday 15th MARCH<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The SIXTH on\nThursday 29th MARCH<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">LADIES&#8217; TICKETS\nfor the Season 10s 6d each&nbsp;<br>\nGENTLEMENS&#8217;\n&#8220;&#8221;&#8221;&#8221;&#8221;&#8221;&#8221;&#8221;&#8221;&#8221;&#8221;&#8221;&#8221;&#8221;&#8221;&#8221;&#8221;&#8221;\n15s<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">may be had of\nMr GRIEVESON at the ROOMS<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">N.B. Tickets\nnot transferable, and unless there are FORTY subscribers there will be no\nAssemblies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CARD ASSEMBLIES<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">for TWELVE\nNIGHTS<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Will commence as soon as there be FORTY subscribers; the Tickets at 18s each ,Tea included, to be transferable.\u00a0<br> ===============================================================\u00a0<br> So, one paid in advance for a series of tickets. The organisers paid the musicians, catering costs and the hire of the assembly rooms (If such a sum was applicable) from this sum.
