I'm no authority but...

...I think the less wealthy people generally had more children back then so someone could help support the family either in trade or on a farm. Also, the less wealthy might think that some of the children might not make it to adulthood either, so if you had more you were probably going to get a few that would make it. I could be wrong though, but that's what I've heard at least in history classes...
