From clerks to barriesters

Hi! I don't know if this has been askes befor but I wanted to know the hierarchy of the men who studied the law. It has always been a bit confusing for me because for example, Mr Philips was a clerk in P&P, Mr John Knightley a barriester and Mr Darcy's uncle a judge. Been the clerk the lower and the judge the higher.
How did one get a better posission if one studied the law? which is its hierarchy?
