Accomplishments

I was wondering what everyone thought about the accomplished woman of Austen's time. Did accomplishments and knowledge help women be stronger and more independent? If that's the case, that same idea applies to women today in some ways. I think that when today's little girls can play instruments, get out the microscope, read, etc, they seem to be able to be much more aware and involved in society. (Sorry if this isn't the right board.)
