I think "accomplishments" had their good and bad sides; at worst, it was young ladies going through the motions of what was expected of them and producing semi-bad artistic performances that no-one would want to listen to on the grounds of artistic merit alone, or semi-ugly ornamental knick-knacks that people of taste would not want in their houses.

But some women ((like Jane Fairfax) did develop serious artistic or literary interests that were satisfying to them, or take pride in craftsmanship. I have a few notes in the file http://www.pemberley.com/janeinfo/pptopic2.html
